Alena Gri's works resemble Gothic art. Realism in the image of a naked body, weirdly curved, cold colors and mostly vertical compositions go with a sense of agony frozen in time, thus evoking memories of the well-known sculptural form - The Crucifixion. But we see no wounds, no crown of thorns - we cannot even be sure that we are facing physical suffering: expressive as the figures, they are still exquisite and mysterious. These works are comparable with modeling in volume - the space is three-dimensional not because of perspective, but because of the techniques typical of modernist collage. The paintings and sculptures depict the female body - a fact that immediately moves us to the present, which is no less sinister and strict than the Gothic world.
